“Making Friends with The Alphabet Through Song, Story, Image, Local Environmental Connection, Music and Movement”
This workshop will cover an integrated arts approach to teaching and exploring the alphabet with children 3-6 yrs.
The following will be covered:
- Creation of a Visual Alphabet that is directly connected to the local environment and operates as a stimuli for story, play, music and movement. Participants will begin to create their own version of the alphabet to match the local area they are teaching in with the use of natural wax crayon and shading techniques that bring out essential form of letter and image as a unified form.
- The basics of storytelling – a basic introduction to storytelling technique and use in teaching the alphabet.
- A basic sharing of ways to incorporate movement, song and music into alphabet familiarity.
- An understanding of developmental stages, differences in learning styles and reading readiness in connection to the appropriateness of a whole body approach.
Languages of Instruction – Indonesian and English
Note: Although this is an introduction to this approach, teachers will be able to access a process to create their own alphabet and become familiar with other artistic modalities to create deeper and more playful connections to the alphabet for children while increasing multiple ways of knowing (kinesthetic, musical, visual/spacial, tactile, literal).
